‘Poor kids’ laptop now to cost $US200

A computer developed for the world’s poor children, dubbed ‘the $US100 ($A108) laptop,’ has reached a milestone: It is now selling for $US200 ($A217).
The One Laptop per Child Foundation, founded by MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte, has started offering the lime-green-and-white machines in lots of 10,000 or more for $US200 apiece on its website.
Those laptops are for purchase by donors who designate where they are to be sent through a program recently launched by the foundation to help finance the product’s launch.
Two weeks ago, a foundation executive reiterated recent statements that it cost $US188 ($A204) to build the computer, up from its $US150 ($A162) price tag in February and an original $100 price.
It was unclear why the price of the machines in the donor program described on the OLPC website was above that $US188 cost, and the foundation declined to elaborate.
The laptops are scheduled to go into production next month at a factory in China, behind their original schedule and in quantities that are a fraction of Negroponte’s earlier projections.
It is unclear when the machines will be ready for customers, as the website said version 1.0 of the software that runs the machine will not be ready until December 7. [Read more...]

The Beginning and the End of DVB-H Mobile TV

The future of DVB-H as the main mobile TV protocol is endangered in its wide adoption by alternative video services. YouTube is one of them, with the help of 3G that makes it possible to transfer video files at great speeds.

The European Commission
chose DVB-H as the main mobile TV standard for Europe. The main reason for their choice was that it has already extended a great deal in other countries and presented a huge amount of potential. Still, streaming video now accounts for 36 percent of all web traffic and the YouTube video accounts for 10 percent of all traffic on the Internet.

The reason for this situation mostly comes from the fact that people want media content matching their interest. Old-fashioned TV is not capable of providing it, which also triggered the evolution of alternative solutions for watching programs. This is where YouTube’s part starts, as a solution for fast video information right on the spot.

Because of this, DVB-H feels like narrowing down on opportunities. Mobile TV could also work if they could deliver in a fast way episodes of good shows, movies or other programs adapted to handset requirements and constrains. The problem with this comes from the fact that mobile TV might not even have the chance of reaching such a high evolution level. [Read more...]
