Google and Verizon Wireless partner to produce a smartphone

Google and Verizon Wireless have officely announced a partnership that will produce an Android mobile device for the two giants which could result in a formidable smartphone that can competite with iPhone and BlackBerry in the market. The paartniership is going to produce a mobile devices, software, application and services, for the Android mobile operating system that’s being developed by both companies which is led by Google. The pairing gives Android its largest-yet wireless industry back and is likely to accelerate the development of Android-based devices and applications tailored to the Android operating system.

The partnership also covers a commitment by both party in devoting substantial resources to enhance its delivery of leading-edge innovation that puts unique application on consumers’ mobile phones. The two companies’ will use each other’s mobile resources and strategies to enable consumers high-end mobile products service. The family of Android phones on the Verizon Wireless network will come from leading handset manufacturers.

Lowell McAdam, chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless said, “The nation’s best wireless broadband network is a perfect complement to the innovation of Android-powered services and devices.  Together, we’ll work to deliver a compelling new experience to our customers.

Eric Schmidt, chairman and chief executive officer for Google said that, “the Android platform allows Verizon Wireless customers to experience faster and easier access to the web from any location, through this partnership, we hope to deliver greater innovation in the mobile space to consumers across the U.S.” The agreement will come to fruition within the next few weeks when Verizon Wireless introduces Android-based handsets to the market in US.

Orange gets iPhone in UK

Orange has secured a deal with Apple to sell iPhone on its network in UK.

The deal ends an exclusive arrangement between UK network operator O2 and the Californian phone maker, which has been in place since 2007.

Orange said its customers would be able to buy the phone “later this year” but did not specify a date or pricing.

However, analysts said that in markets where there was already competition there was little difference in handset prices but small variations in tariffs.

“There’s not a lot they can do – they are subsidising the hardware, so they can’t afford to do much on the tariff,” said Carolina Milanesi of Gartner.

“You may see a £30 per month tariff versus £35, but I would not expect anything more.”

Orange recently revealed plans to merge its UK network with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile to create a business with 28.4 million customers.

If given the go-ahead, it would be the UK’s largest provider, overtaking Telefonica’s O2, with about 37% of the mobile market.

Flickr app for iphone released – Yahoo

It is not news that iphone is the newest and most popular mobile phone in town today, with your iphone you can do a lot of things with it, but you can not upload pictures so easy with it, because iphone camera is not ideal for taking photographs. Although you can still manage to upload via email path in your iphone, but the iphone mail client will auto downsizes images for you and that is why lot of people doesn’t use it for uploading images.

After a long waiting, yahoo has finally released a flickr application for iphone. The application was designed for the iphone and ipod touch and it allow some basic flickr functionality in the long awaited application. When you open your application for the first time, you will need to login to your account and authorize the application to run. You have to do this in Safari, because it is not built into the phone yet. Lot of users thinks it would have been better if it was built into the phone application.

Once you have it setup, it is ready to use, you can view your photo, contacts, search Flickr, tags, favorites, recent activity, leave comments, sets, edit photos and videos, mark images as favorites, upload photos and videos and lot more. This application enable you to add a title, description, tags, comment, add it to a set, turn on the current location tag and set the privacy level for the image when you upload an image to your iphone.

The application comes with a good design and everything is formatted well for iphone use only. It worked very well on WiFi and decently well on Edge also, it was a little slow, which was expected, but generally, it is a nice application.

iphone users can now snap, upload, tag and package location data to an image. iphone 3G owners get the ability to shoot and upload video with 3G. Unlike when they have to send to YouTube, feature that came with iphone OS 3.0, users have to open the flickr application separately from the video editor in order to get it onto the Yahoo-owned photo site.

Making cheap phone look like smartphone

Microsoft has unveiled new technology that will allow standard, non-”smart” phones to run applications such as Facebook or Twitter.

Designed for emerging markets, the OneApp software can be downloaded just like a new ringtone.

Rather than an application store like those offered by many manufacturers and networks, OneApp will offer a standard set of apps decided by operators.

Storage for the apps will be maintained by the operators, rather than users.

The lack of memory and processing power in non-smartphones has to date limited their utility for running applications.

“What we’re letting you do is get access to the applications and services you want from a device you already own,” said Tim McDonough, Microsoft’s senior director of mobile product management.

“If you don’t own a PC, or you share a PC, your mobile phone may be your first or only computing device.”

In a few weeks’ time, Blue Label Telecom in South Africa will become the first operator to run OneApp, offering apps for Facebook, Twitter, and Windows Live Messenger.

Application developers will be able to fine-tune the apps on offer in other regions. That will be made easier by tailoring the software to OneApp, rather than adjusting it for a variety of handsets.
