The deal between Orange owner France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile UK will create a business with sales of 9.4bn euros (£8.2bn; $13.5bn).

The merged firm will have about 37% of the UK mobile market – overtaking the current leader, Telefonica’s O2.

It is the second large corporate deal in two days, after Kraft Food’s £10.2bn takeover proposal for Cadbury.

‘Champion’

T-Mobile is currently the fourth-largest mobile operator in the UK, with a 15% share of the market. O2 has a 27% share, followed by Vodafone (25%) and Orange (22%).

The firms said in a joint statement that they hoped to create “a new mobile champion”, adding that it was hoped the 50:50 joint venture could be signed by November.

Integrating the business will cost between £600m and £800m, the firms said. This bill would include decommissioning mobile phone masts, cutting back the network of stores and streamlining other operations.

In launching the device, the world’s largest handset maker takes its stab at the Apple Inc. With the Tube, Nokia will be entering a crowded field. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (005930.SE) and LG Electronics Inc. (066570.SE) have tried their hand with multiple touchscreen devices. Motorola Inc. (MOT) has its Ming product in China. Sony Ericsson plans to launch its Xperia X1, and Research in Motion Ltd. (RIMM) is working on a touchscreen Blackberry.

Nokia is typically late in the game when it comes to bringing innovative features into its products. But Milanesi said the company typically designs with a platform mindset, and added that she expects more touchscreen devices to show up soon.

The Tube will also test the appeal of the S60 platform that powers many of Nokia’s devices. S60 is software developed by Symbian, which Nokia said it was acquiring.

While it is likely to be a hit in Europe and other international markets, where Nokia phones dominate, it’s unclear how successful the Tube will be in the U.S. Many Nokia phones don’t receive carrier support, and are sold through third-party retailers such as Best Buy Co. Inc. (BBY) and its own stores. High- end products such as its N95 appeal to a niche market.
