Google to Announce Software & Services for Google Cell Phones

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Google is expected to announce within the next two weeks their advanced software and services that will enable handset manufacturers to bring Google-powered phones to market by mid-2008.

The future Google cell phones are expected to merge applications such as Google Maps, YouTube and Gmail.  Google is also planning to have an “open-source” platform for its cell phone so independent software developers can build additional cell phone features.

Software developers will have access to the operating system which controls applications and interacts with hardware.  Google is also expanding into enterprise software which has traditionally been dominated by Microsoft.

Google has been moving quickly over the past couple years to reach beyond text-based, pay-per-click web search advertising to new markets including online video, radio, print advertising and television.  Google has also acquired several startups targeting the mobile phone market.  They recently acquired Jaiku, maker of a mobile phone application where people can use to send short messages about where they are and what they’re doing, and Zingku Inc., a mobile social networking start-up.
